My residency at the Taipei
Artist Village studio is a fantastic opportunity for me to investigate the distinctive
styles of architecture in Taiwan. While sharing a Chinese ethnic and linguistic
heritage with other parts of the region, contemporary Taiwan is the repository
of a unique overlay of cultural influences, with its rich indigenous legacy and
the diverse influences of both western and eastern colonial powers.
During my residency at TAV, I
hope to research the philosophy behind and construction techniques of
traditional Taiwanese vernacular architecture. Using both hand-drawn and
photographic images, I will develop a drawing installation based on this overlay of building styles and intricate ornamental elements, which encapsulate the complex and fascinating history of this beautiful island.
